Mr.
Wilde writes, "I started to photograph these places with the
idea that I would use the photos for the paintings or drawings, but I never
could get away from my interest in the captured image.
I started to realize that through exploring some alternative photo
processes, I might be able to use a photograph instead of a painting or
drawing to convey a story. So I
started using the photographic images, mixing them with the other old
photos and documents that I had found to form collages."
Orchid Sprig,
22"x28", Private Collection photo emulsion on white gold in a handcrafted GLD frame with 12KT white gold over black
clay and a black waxed finish
"As I started photographing pathways with bare trees or heavy fog laden
over growth, and deteriorating barns choked with vines and growth, I found
that one of my primary themes was the intersection of man and nature.
The fringes, out of the cities and suburbs is where you find nature
slowly taking back what man has built, like grass growing through cracks in
the sidewalk. This exploration of
structure and nature led me to find a second main subject, botanical
photographs. Shot in the studio
under controlled lighting, they are somewhat opposite of my outdoor work, yet
they are also about seeing the shape and form of nature and truly observing
the things that we pass by all the time: 'old building,' 'pretty
flower,' etc. In these flowers,
I try to find a balance between beauty and mystery."

“Cornel Wilde
is a preservationist; through his vision and his painterly images, we are
reminded of a truth-abandoned and decaying houses, farms, bridges, factories,
and monuments all make clear our dying South.
Juxtaposing this truth, and perhaps as a breath of life, Cornel
illustrates the texture and tonal dance of light and shadow with his flower
images.” ~Alan P. Shuptrine
